It took me a few days to decide to start this new series of telling athletes' stories on my blog, but I thought this would be a really fun and meaningful feature for everyone reading! To kick things off, I want to talk about someone whose journey and message have inspired me for a long time: Jordyn Wieber.
From Elite Phenom to College Leader
Jordyn started gymnastics at four years old at a local gym before moving to Gedderts Twistars USA. She began competing at age seven, and it wasn't long before her elite career completely took off—by twelve, she was competing on the elite stage.
Throughout her elite career, Jordyn was a powerhouse. She won multiple American Cup titles (in 2009, 2011, and 2012), captured the All-Around title at the 2011 World Championships, and helped Team USA secure world gold.

After her competitive career, she stayed deeply connected to the sport. She served as a team manager and volunteer assistant coach at UCLA before taking on the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas. She led the Razorbacks for seven incredible seasons, building a powerhouse culture before stepping away to focus on her family and personal life.
Turning Heartbreak Into Gold: 2,880 Minutes
I’ve been motivated by Jordyn's TED Talk for a long time and knew I wanted to write an article about it. Her message has the power to help athletes overcome obstacles, whether on the floor or in everyday life.
In her talk, she reflects on how she turned complete devastation into ultimate triumph in just 48 hours—or exactly 2,880 minutes.
Former Olympic gymnast Jordyn Wieber shares how losing her dream of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic All-Around finals taught her the true meaning of resilience. Just 2,880 minutes after hitting bottom on the global stage, she chose to reset, push forward, and help Team USA win team gold.
Her core message is something every athlete needs to hear: We can't always control what happens to us, but we can always choose when to stop feeling like a victim and start moving forward.
Why You Should Watch It
If you haven't seen it yet, I strongly recommend every gymnast, coach, and sports fan go listen to this TED Talk! Jordyn has an incredible way of drawing you into her speech, making it as engaging as it is empowering. It’s a powerful reminder that our hardest moments don't define us—our response to them does.
