If you want to see the most exciting team on the rise in the Big Ten right now, look at Penn State. They are coming off a great season where they finished in the top 20 and made it to NCAA Regionals for the fourth year in a row.
Coaching Staff
For the last nine seasons, Head Coach Sarah Brown was the leader who built this high-energy culture and kept the athletes healthy through a tough schedule. She did an amazing job, and she actually just took the head coaching job at Texas State to start their brand-new program.
Even with her moving on this summer, Penn State isn't starting over. They are totally locked in because of the staff that has been working with her to turn talent into huge scores:
Ralph Rosso (Associate Head Coach): He is the technical leader in the gym. His work on uneven bars has been a huge reason the team is getting such big scores lately. He knows exactly how to fix handstands, clean up skills, and give the athletes the confidence they need to hit when the pressure is on.
Lynzee Brown (Assistant Coach): An absolute legend in the gymnastics world. Having a former NCAA champion and Olympian in the gym gives the team a winning mindset. She coaches floor and has completely changed the lineup. She blends big tumbling with great dancing, teaching the girls exactly how to own the floor on the big stage.
Working Together As A Coaching Staff
What stands out to me the most—especially as a coach—is how Penn State builds its roster. They don't just rely on famous recruits; they focus on making every player better. Under this staff, you see athletes who started out completely under the radar turn into consistent 9.9 anchors by their junior and senior years. That is the ultimate sign of coaches who know how to work with the person, not just the routine.
The Next Steps
Even with the leadership changes, Penn State has put the rest of the conference on notice. This is a scrappy, disciplined team that plays with a chip on its shoulder, and they have the legendary fan support of Rec Hall right behind them. They already proved they can go toe-to-toe with the biggest teams in the Big Ten. Now, they are ready to take that next big step toward Nationals.
