Missouri Gymnastics: The SEC's Rising Force

The Mizzou Rise: to SEC Powerhouse

If you are looking for the most exciting upward trend in the SEC, look at the Mizzou Tigers. Over the last few years, the program has evolved from a team fighting for a regional spot into a nationally ranked powerhouse that consistently challenges the biggest names in the sport.

Coaching Staff

The momentum in Columbia is led by Head Coach Shannon Welker, who has been the architect of this rise. Welker has built a culture that is famously "tough-as-nails" while maintaining the supportive environment needed to keep athletes healthy through a grueling SEC schedule. He is supported by a staff that specializes in turning untapped potential into All-American performances:

  • Whitney Snowden (Associate Head Coach): A massive part of the staff’s technical powerhouse, Snowden’s elite eye on the uneven bars has been absolutely crucial to dialing in those clean lines, crisp handstands, and high-scoring routines that Mizzou needs to pace the SEC.

  • Jackie Terpak (Assistant Coach): Bringing energy and creative vision as the team's choreographer, Terpak has completely transformed the floor exercise lineup into a dynamic, showstopping rotation. Her ability to help the athletes find their confidence ensures they absolutely command the floor on the big stage.

  • Oleksii Koltakov (Assistant Coach): A stellar addition to the gym, Koltakov brings a huge elite technical expertise and deep postseason experience. His background is a massive asset for sharpening execution details and building rock-solid consistency when the pressure drops.

Working As A Coaching Staff

What stands out to me—especially as a fellow coach—is how Mizzou handles the "SEC Grind." They don't just rely on big-name recruits; they rely on depth. You will see Mizzou gymnasts who started as "under-the-radar" prospects develop into athletes who are winning individual titles by their junior year. That is a sign of a staff that knows how to coach the individual, not just the routine.

The Final Four

After a record-breaking 2026 campaign that saw the Tigers consistently knocking on the door of the top-10, they have firmly established themselves as a team that nobody wants to face in a regional final. Mizzou is a program with a chip on its shoulder, and that makes them dangerous. They are scrappy, they are technically sound, and they have the fan support of the Hearnes Center behind them. They have already proven they can go toe-to-toe with the giants of the SEC; now, they are looking to take that next leap toward the NCAA Final Four.
