Gymnast Salute

Interview With OU Commit Joshua Hanny

1.How old were you when you started gymnastics, and what originally drew you to the sport?

I started gymnastics when I was 4 years old. I was drawn to the sport because I loved climbing around and just being very active.

2.What is your favorite meet, your favorite and least favorite events, and the hardest/easiest skill you ever trained?

My favorite competition is probably 2025 DP Nationals. My favorite event is floor, and I don’t really have a least favorite. The hardest skill I have trained is front 3.5 on floor, called the Goshima. I don’t really think there is an easiest skill but one of the skills that took the least amount of time for me to learn is hopped pirouette on P bars.

3.Gymnastics is incredibly mental. What was your hardest struggle during your time as a gymnast? How did you deal with nerves, pressure, and getting in your head or temporarily "losing" a skill?

Not completely a mental struggle, but when I was around 14 years old I snapped my tibia. It took me a long time to get back to tumbling without pain. In everything I do I trust in my Lord , Jesus Christ, so whether I’m dealing with nerves or whatever it may be I trust that God’s will be done. I don’t know his plan but I can trust that he has what’s best for me.

4.What was your biggest accomplishment in the sport, and did you ever want to do college gymnastics?

I have gone to ETC twice for Region 3 and the first time I won bronze on Rings. Ever since I was really young I wanted to do college gymnastics.

5.How did you cope when your time as a gymnast ended, and did you transition into coaching or are you currently still competing?

I am still competing

6.Who was your gymnastics role model, and what advice would you give to someone starting the sport for the first time?

I wouldn’t say I had one role model, but in the later years I would say Brody Malone was one of the main ones, because he is another Christian gymnast. My advice to anyone starting the sport for the first time would be to put the work. Hard work beats talent every time.

7. What two goals you want to achieve in the sport of gymnastics?

My two goals I want to achieve is make Senior National Team and win the NCAA Championship.
