On Saturday, July 19th, 2025, Ava and I had the absolute pleasure of attending the U.S. Classic Gymnastics Meet in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. This incredible event brought together gymnasts from across the country — including HOPES athletes, Junior Elites, and Senior Elites — all under one roof.
If you’re not familiar with it, HOPES is a developmental level that serves as a stepping stone to becoming a Junior or Senior Elite gymnast. Getting to witness athletes at every stage of their journey was such a powerful reminder of how deep and talented the gymnastics community truly is.

Senior Elites: The Main Event
I specifically came to watch the Senior Elites, and they did not disappoint. Big names like Leanne Wong, Reese Esponda, Hezly Rivera, Joscelyn Roberson, and many more lit up the arena with their talent and poise.
There were two sessions: one at 2 PM and one at 7 PM — and yes, I stayed for both! Each session brought fresh excitement and new faces. I saw gymnasts I’d never watched compete in person before, and it was inspiring to see their unique styles and high-level routines up close.
Meeting the Stars: Never Be Afraid to Ask
One of the absolute highlights of the day was getting to meet several gymnasts and coaches I’ve admired for so long. I’m incredibly thankful to Brooke, Reese, Melea, Jordis, and Audree for being so kind and open to taking photos.
I was nervous to ask at first — but if I’ve learned anything from this experience, it’s that if you don’t ask, you’ll never know. You might miss a once-in-a-lifetime chance. And I didn’t want to go home with regrets — so I asked, and I’m so glad I did.

KJ Kindler, the Oklahoma Head Coach and my teammates from Wilmette
KJ Kindler: A Coaching Inspiration
An unforgettable moment came when someone who works at my former gym told me that KJ Kindler, head coach of the University of Oklahoma, was sitting just one row to my left. I nearly lost my mind.
Oklahoma is a powerhouse in NCAA gymnastics, and watching them dominate the sport from my living room is one thing — but sitting next to the head coach in person? Totally surreal. Meeting KJ was something I never thought would happen, and I’ll never forget it. She’s such an inspiration to so many in the gymnastics world, myself included.

Haleigh Bryant: LSU Royalty
Another pinch-me moment happened between the sessions, when I learned that Haleigh Bryant from LSU was sitting in our section. I quickly asked for a photo — and she said yes!
I've followed Haleigh and LSU closely, especially during their historic 2024 season when they won their first-ever NCAA National Championship. Haleigh is such a powerful and graceful gymnast, and she’s a phenomenal role model for so many. Meeting her was a total dream come true.
And Then... Simone Biles Walked By?!
As we were leaving the venue, I spotted Laurie Hernandez signing autographs and got to say a quick hello to Sam Peszek. I even had a brief conversation with John Roethlisberger, co-owner of Flip Fest, which was so cool.
In my section alone, I noticed other major coaching figures like Jay Clark (LSU Head Coach) and Chris Brooks(Arkansas Assistant Coach).
But the biggest shock? Two-time Olympian Simone Biles made a surprise appearance at the Classic. I got to see her as she exited, and I still can’t believe how close I was to one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
Why This Sport Will Always Be Home
Although I’m no longer actively competing, the love I have for this sport has never left. There’s something about watching elite gymnastics in person — the atmosphere, the energy, the community — that’s impossible to put into words.
Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or just a fan, events like these are a reminder of how inspiring, challenging, and beautiful this sport is. Gymnastics has given me so much, and I feel incredibly lucky to stay involved — even as a retired gymnast.
Looking to the Future
I left the U.S. Classic feeling more inspired than ever. One day, I hope to become a college coach and give back to the sport that’s given me so much. Being surrounded by these amazing athletes and mentors reminded me that anything is possible with passion, hard work, and the courage to show up.
Good luck to all the athletes competing in the U.S. Championships this weekend — I’ll be cheering for you from the stands or from my screen!
