Utah Gymnastics: Why The RedRocks On Resetting for 2027

The Red Rocks Reset: Utah's Technical Overhaul

The Red Rocks have been the gold standard in college gymnastics for over 50 years. Missing the National Championship this past season was a major shock to the system, but if you look at how the staff is handling the off-season, you can see they are using that "miss" as pure motivation. As a coach and judge, I’ve been watching Utah closely. They aren't just moving on from 2026; they are actively resetting their entire approach to get back to the top.

A Renewed Vision

Head Coach Carly Dockendorf just signed a contract extension through 2031, showing the university is fully behind her vision. She’s making big moves to ensure the 2027 season looks very different.

The biggest off-season story in Salt Lake City is the addition of Steve Arkell as the new bars coach. Arkell is a massive hire. He brings over 40 years of elite-level experience and has coached national team members at the highest levels. His job is clear: fix the bars. If the Red Rocks can get their bars rotation back to being top-three in the country, they instantly become a title contender again. He joins a solid staff of Mike Hunger (vault) and Myia Hambrick (floor), who are all working to support Dockendorf’s continued focus on that famous Utah beam legacy.

The Culture of "Hard Work and Unity"

You can’t talk about Utah without talking about their culture. Even after a tough end to the year, the team is already looking forward. They’ve got a mix of experienced returners like sophomore standout Avery Neff and a group of hungry athletes ready to prove themselves.

The atmosphere in the Huntsman Center is legendary, and that fan support is a huge advantage. The staff is leaning into that pride, focusing on "hard work and unity" to bridge the gap between their 2026 results and the high standards the program has held since 1976.

Poised for a Comeback

Utah is a program that doesn't stay down for long. They have the resources, the coaching, and the fan base to flip the script immediately. With Arkell on board to sharpen their technical skills and Dockendorf focused on building a stronger team identity, the Red Rocks are already "resetting" for a deep run in 2027. Don't let the 2026 finish fool you—the Red Rocks are going to be right back in the conversation when January hits.

With Steve Arkell joining the staff to specifically target technical development on bars, how do you think his experience as a national team coach will impact the day-to-day training intensity for the team heading into the 2027 season?
