Flipping the Script: Navigating the Double-Edged Sword of the NCAA Gymnastics Transfer Portal

If you feel like the rosters in NCAA gymnastics are shifting faster than ever, you’re not imagining things. The "Transfer Portal" has officially become one of the most significant—and complex—parts of collegiate gymnastics. As a coach, I see the portal as a double-edged sword: it provides incredible freedom for athletes to find the right "fit," but it also introduces a level of roster instability that coaches and programs are still learning to manage.

What is the Portal, Really?

The portal is essentially a national database that allows student-athletes to signal their intent to transfer. Once a gymnast provides written notice to their school’s compliance office, the school has 48 hours to enter their name into the system.

However, there is a major detail people often misunderstand: entering the portal is not a guarantee of a new spot. It comes with a unique set of stakes:

  • The Risk: Once an athlete enters the portal, their original school is no longer obligated to keep their athletic scholarship or roster spot.

  • The Reward: It allows other coaches to legally contact the athlete to discuss potential opportunities, clearing up what was previously a recruiting "gray area."

The Coaching Carousel Connection

We talk a lot about the "coaching carousel" when head coaches move to new programs, and the two phenomena are now permanently linked. When a program hires a new head coach, it almost always triggers a wave of portal entries.

Athletes who signed with a previous staff may feel the new philosophy isn't the right "vibe" for their personal goals, and that’s perfectly okay. The portal gives them the agency to go where they can thrive—whether that’s a top-10 program or a school that better aligns with their academic or career goals.

Strategies for Success: Bridging the Gap

When I look at the current landscape, the most successful programs are the ones that view the portal as a "gap-filler"rather than a primary recruiting strategy. Navigating this new era successfully requires a tailored approach from both sides of the equation.

For the Athlete

My advice is always to treat a transfer like a second recruiting trip.

  • Look at the chemistry: Does this coach’s philosophy actually match how you want to be trained?

  • Prioritize the environment: Don’t just follow a "top-tier" logo. Follow the culture that will make you a better person and a better gymnast.

For the Program

Coaches are now laser-focused on finding "culture fits." A transfer who is just looking for any open roster spot is very different from a transfer who has fully bought into the team’s mission.

The Golden Rule of the Portal:

The programs that win in the portal are the ones that prioritize transparency—talkingopenly about expectations, lineup spots, and team roles before any paperwork is signed. The

New Reality

The transfer portal is here to stay. While it can be nerve-wracking to witness so much movement, it ultimately gives athletes the power to take control of their own journeys.

For fans, coaches, and followers of the sport, it means we have to stay agile. Rosters are no longer set in stone the day a gymnast signs their National Letter of Intent. Instead, they are fluid, evolving, and constantly changing—redefining the gymnastics landscape one season at a time.
