Standford Gymnastics:The Standard of Excellence

The Cardinal Standard: Consistency and Excellence at Stanford

When you talk about programs that define "consistency," you have to talk about Stanford. Under the leadership of Tabitha Yim, the Rodgers Family Director of Women’s Gymnastics, the Cardinal have become a model for how to balance elite athletic performance with a rigorous academic environment.

Yim, a Stanford alum herself, has been at the helm for nine seasons, and her impact is undeniable. She has fostered a program culture that treats every athlete as a "whole person" first. In a high-pressure sport, her focus on mental and physical well-being—while maintaining a technical standard that consistently keeps the Cardinal in the top 10—is a masterclass in modern collegiate coaching.

Building a Championship Staff

Stanford’s success isn't just about the head coach; it’s about the team Yim has assembled to develop talent across all four events:

  • Vince Smurro (Associate Head Coach): Now in his fifth season, Smurro has been a cornerstone of the staff, playing a huge role in the program’s tactical evolution since his promotion in 2024. He is officially the program's Chris Swircek Associate Head Women’s Gymnastics Coach.

  • Hallie Mossett (First Assistant Coach): Mossett has become a standout for her floor choreography and her ability to push athletes to their creative limits. Her work has been a huge factor in Stanford’s rise in national floor rankings, and she currently serves as the Fontaine and Langenfeld Women’s Gymnastics First Assistant Coach.

  • Caleb Rickard (Assistant Coach): Rounding out a staff that was recently honored with regional coaching awards, Rickard provides the essential technical support that keeps Stanford’s routines clean and competitive.

A Global and Strategic Approach

What sets this program apart is its international footprint. With athletes representing countries from all over the world—including recent additions like Olympians Ana Bărbosu and Levi Jung-Ruivivar—Yim has created a diverse, global team that brings unique experiences to the mat. Watching how she manages their health and training—especially for athletes with heavy elite-level mileage—shows a level of strategic planning that other programs are now trying to emulate.

Coming off a historic 2026 season that saw them reach the NCAA Semifinals and hold a top-10 national ranking for most of the year, the Cardinal are no longer just "contenders"—they are a permanent fixture at the highest level of the sport. Stanford is a program that does things the "right way." They don't cut corners, and they don't sacrifice their values for a score. With a staff that is clearly in sync and a recruiting strategy that brings in world-class talent, "The Farm" is going to remain a major force in the ACC and the NCAA for years to come.
