Minnesota Gymnastics: The Gopher Rise

The Red Rocks Reset: Utah's Technical Overhaul

If you want to see a program that has completely rewritten its own history over the last few years, look no further than the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Under the leadership of head coach Jenny Hansen, who just completed her 12th year at the helm, the program has moved from a consistent regional competitor to a national contender that just punched its ticket to the Final Four for the first time in school history.

A Staff Built for Development

The success in Minneapolis isn't just about the athletes; it’s about a coaching staff that has mastered the art of development. In 2026, the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) recognized the excellence of the Gophers' staff, who led the team to a No. 4 final ranking.

The current coaching lineup includes:

  • Jenny Hansen (Head Coach): The architect of the Gophers' rise and 12-year leader of the program.

  • Mya Hooten (Assistant Coach): A program legend who transitioned seamlessly from a decorated athlete to a member of the coaching staff, bringing a unique, peer-level perspective to the team.

  • Kiki Parenteau (Assistant Coach): A key technical voice who has been instrumental in the team's growth over the past four seasons.

  • Sam Scherwinski (Assistant Coach): Hired in July 2025, Scherwinski brings valuable experience from his time at Nebraska and Lindenwood to round out the staff.

A Culture of Belief

What makes this staff special is their ability to elevate every athlete on the roster. Whether it's training a national beam champion like Brooklyn Rowray—who capped off her incredible 2026 senior season by winning the NCAA individual title on the balance beam—or helping veterans reach All-American status, this staff has created a "culture of belief" that was on full display during their 2026 postseason run.

Jenny Hansen has done an incredible job of balancing the "Gopher Pride" tradition with modern technical standards. The team’s performance in 2026—their highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships—proves that they have officially closed the gap between themselves and the traditional "Powerhouse" programs. They’ve proven that you don't need a 50-year dynasty to compete for a national title if you have the right technical foundation and team chemistry.

The Golden Era

Minnesota is currently in their "Golden Era." They have the facilities at Maturi Pavilion, a passionate fan base, and a coaching staff that is quite literally among the best in the country. They’ve successfully moved into the tier of schools that other programs now analyze when they want to learn how to run a top-tier gym. Keep your eyes on the Gophers; they’ve proven they belong at the Final Four, and they are hungry for more.
